The mountainous region, sloping down to the sea, is located south of the Marche and has a rather long Adriatic coast. Whether on the coast or in hilly areas, the calcareous clay soil can be found almost everywhere in the region, where primarily the grape varieties Montepulciano and Sangiovese (red wine) and Trebbiano (white wine) thrive. In addition, there are a number of autochthonous grape varieties, such as Pecorino and Passerina. The most famous wines are Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. These are two designated DOC zones of Abruzzo.
